Reset Incorrect Bind Serial (SOA) Number

  • Serial in Zone file has extra digit (doesn't matter where)
  • DNS MADE EASY is my backup DNS
dig mydomain.com soa --> 2910221123 (wtf!)
dig @ns5.dnsmadeeasy.com -->2910221123
dig @ns6.dnsmadeeasy.com -->2910221123
dig @ns7.dnsmadeeasy.com -->2910221123
2910221123 =(old & incorrect)
2147483647+
5057704770=
5057704770=(over 4,294,967,295 so we subtract 4,294,967,296)
4294967296-
762737474=Temp SOA

  • Set Temp serial to 762737474
  • Restart BIND
  • Wait for Changes to propagate ( I usually dig the domain until i see the Temp serial
dig mydomain.com soa --> 762737474
dig @ns5.dnsmadeeasy.com mydomain.com -->762737474
dig @ns6.dnsmadeeasy.com mydomain.com -->762737474
dig @ns7.dnsmadeeasy.com mydomain.com -->762737474
  • Set Serial to 2009091001=current SOA (Correct)
  • Restart BIND
dig mydomain.com soa --> 2009091001
dig @ns5.dnsmadeeasy.com mydomain.com -->2009091001
dig @ns6.dnsmadeeasy.com mydomain.com -->2009091001
